How to Grow More Vegetables Than You Ever Thought Possible on Less Land Than You Can Imagine: A Primer on the Life-Giving Biodynamic/French Intensiv
Consumer review about How to Grow More Vegetables Than You Ever Thought Possible on Less Land Than You Can Imagine: A Primer on the Life-Giving Biodynamic/French Intensiv :
Excellent book on variations of the French Intensive Bed vegetable growing system. We adapted one of our beds on the allotment last year to the principles laid down here, and the results were good, so we are using three beds on the system this year, with some variations, to see how we progress. One of our variations will be to make one bed a no-digging bed, to see how it fares compared with the others. For the technically-minded, there is more than enough information here in this book. For the average person who just wants to grow more of their own, just skip most of technical stuff and concentrate on the more practical advice. Although written for the US, most of the advice is good over here, too.(Read more)

Beautiful No-Mow Yards: 50 Amazing Lawn Alternatives
Consumer review about Beautiful No-Mow Yards: 50 Amazing Lawn Alternatives :
I really couldn't have a more contrary view on this book, than the first reviewer, who gave it a measly single star. I suspect he/she may not enjoy gardening, perhaps? But for someone who is a newbie gardener (and pretty passionate about it already!) the book is a revelation ! It will not suit everyone, that's true; for those who want a low maintenance garden, for example, (which only requires mowing twice a month in the summer and doing some basic pruning in winter), this probably isn't the book for you. BUT if, when you look at a lawn, you think "how dull" or "god, what's that doing for bio-diversity?", I would highly recommend this. Having read it, I've started converting my lawn (an area of 15m x 10m) into something more interesting :) The first 5m square has already been converted to a thyme lawn, which doesn't need to be mowed ! :) I would recommend people look at the following links if they're thinking about this too: [google: The Guardian gardens-grass-free-floral-lawns] and [google: Reading University rethinking the traditional grass lawn] as they present a "manifesto" for no lawn gardens, which are frankly more beautiful, interesting, better for bees and wildlife, than a traditional lawn.A word to the uninitiated. In the first two growing seasons, there will be as much work to do as you would with a lawn - but rather than mowing you will have to weed, until the grass free area is established. The result in years is spectacular though :) One final thought: I visited Sissinghurst last spring, which kicked off this whole idea for me: there was a whole section of the garden planted with Scillas and Anemones - see this and I beg anyone not to be "wowed". [google: Sissinghurst in spring]In summary, great book, great ideas and well worth a read if you're interested in gardening ;) And, as a final rallying call: "Goodbye to Grass" ! :)(Read more)

Mini Farming For Beginners: Build A Thriving Backyard Mini Farm, No Matter How Small The Space (Homesteading - Backyard Gardening - Handbook - Organic) by Bradley Blair (2014-11-13)
Consumer review about Mini Farming For Beginners: Build A Thriving Backyard Mini Farm, No Matter How Small The Space (Homesteading - Backyard Gardening - Handbook - Organic) by Bradley Blair (2014-11-13) :
Why should you take up mini farming? In this book, several reasons are given. One, it is cost effective, according to the author. Two, mini farming is recreational, a hobby, and the activity is leass of a chore and more of a source of personal enjoyment. Three, you have the ability to sustain your family, and possibly, achieve a source of additional income. Lastly, there is a positive impact on the environment. There are other reasons readers can come up with to explain why they have taken up mini farming, but whatever your reason is, the author clearly identifies commitment and perseverance as essential ingredients for success in mini farming. I find the book a compelling read and believe it will be a valuable resource for anyone who is genuinely considering a mini farm in their own backyard.Reviewed by Thomas Jerome BakerAuthor of "I Live In Chile"(Read more)
